| VII. FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT A) The fruit of the Spirit is that which is naturally produced to the Christian connected to Christ or through which the Holy Spirit flows even as fruit is produced on the vine if the branch has the life flow of the vine through it. Leviticus 19:9-18; 1 John 4: 7-21; and 1 Cor. 13:1-7 D) Joy Joy is different from happiness in that it is not dependent upon circumstances but upon our relationship to and salvation in Christ. 1 John 1:3-5 1) Our strength is in joy. It is impossible to separate joy from love and it is impossible to have joy without love. Grace and joy are from the same Greek word. 5) We believe that we as followers of Christ should have joy... in temptation. James 1:2 6) ...in prison Phil. 1:18 7) ...others growth in grace. Phil. 2:2 8) ...all conditions. Phil. 4:4 and 1 Thess. 5:16 9) Such Joy has its origins in God and “in” or “of” the Holy Spirit. Matthew 24:45-51 A) Self Control / Temperance Self-control is control of one's emotions and desires. self-restraint in conduct, expressions, or appetites. It is moderation. The opposite of self-control is an undisciplined spirit. Proverbs 25:28 1) Christ was tempted to use the power of God to satisfy His own physical needs. Psalm 25:9 2) This Fruit of the Spirit is a very highly prized characteristic by God. 1 Peter 3:4 3) The Bible gives only two examples of persons that are meek. The first one is Moses. Even though Moses killed a man, was a learned scholar, set up the Jewish legal system, was a strong leader that formed a nation out of slaves and was capable of strong emotions, God says that he was meek. Meekness in the Bible refers to the relationship to God. Moses was awed by God's presence and he felt unworthy to fulfill God's call for him. He talked face to face with God. Meekness is how we act or react to God's guidance of our lives and our response to His Word. Numbers 12:3 4) The second example of meekness is Christ. Matthew 11:29 and 21:5 5) We, too, are to grow in meekness. Col. 3:12; James 1:21; and 1 Tim. 6:11 6) We believe that together the Fruit of the Spirit defines what Christians are to exemplify in their daily walk with the Lord. We believe that these are the characteristics that identify those that are truly Christians and those that have not yet found their place in God. These, more than signs or wonders, are the mark of a born again Christian. |
